Africa's Ghost River

The Okavango river in Botswana provides a lifeline for creatures enduring the harsh extremes of the Kalahari desert. This series reveals the daily struggles of animals in three different environments as the river flows south, from the lush eden of the Okavango delta to the parched salt flats of the Makgadigadi.

Many creatures in the vast Kalahari desert depend on the Okavango river. When it floods it transforms brutal desert to a vast, verdant oasis. But beyond the delta, the water begins to evaporate into the sand. What’s left trickles south, offering a lifeline down the ancient Boteti watercourse, only to disappear completely across the vast Makgadigadi region beyond. Surprisingly these 3 different environments support an enormous volume of life.
