Varty is driven by his passion for big cats and his despair at the dwindling population of tigers in the wild.

In the process he’s survived everything that man and nature could throw at him…a savage tiger attack …fire… floods… poachers… and mercenaries… divorce… death… and the constant threat of financial ruin.

RIDING THE TIGER is the story of John Varty’s incredible and tumultuous project, which now sees 15 tigers living, hunting and breeding on a vast and spectacular sanctuary called Tiger Canyons.

Varty, or JV as he is known, is a mythic figure, gritty, monomaniacal and hard-nosed, like Moby Dick’s Captain Ahab, with perhaps the far sightedness of a Charles Darwin.

RIDING THE TIGER follows the incredible saga of JV’s journey and the most amazing stories of 6 of the 25 tigers who’ve inhabited Tiger Canyons, including Corbett, the tyrant king, who tried to kill JV and nearly destroyed everything.
