Cuddly & Wild: Adorable Animal Babies

PLAY

The first year in a wild animal's life is the most crucial! Will it get enough nourishment? How will it cope with sibling rivalry or the ever looming risk of predation?

Early in the year, when hurricanes rage over the North Sea, the gray seals of Heligoland give birth. It’s hard to imagine a more uncomfortable time to be brought into the world but the babies are ready to withstand the bitter wind chill, they are born with fur and a thick layer of fat!

Wild boars have a rather frosty start in life, too. Their piglets are born even before the last snow has melted.

Ultimately, the survival of these animal children of the north is reliant upon the experience and care of their parents. The first year is the toughest. Getting through it may not guarantee a long life, but from here on in the chances of survival grow, just as the little ones do.
