Urak Lawoi: Brothers of the Sea

PLAY

In the clash between tradition and tourism, a resilient community of Urak Lawoi divers fights to safeguard their ancient underwater fishing technique on Thailand's Koh Lipe island.

On the maritime border between Thailand and Malaysia, live the Urak Lawoi. A community that continues to practice an ancient and risky underwater fishing technique, unique in the world. Although they were once a nomadic tribe, they settled down a hundred years ago. Today, they live mostly on the island of Koh Lipe, in Thailand, where they struggle to preserve their traditions, existing right next to a growing tourist industry. They are explorers, fishermen, and - above all - great divers. This is their story.
