Freetown Fashionistas: Powerful Women in Sierra Leone

PLAY

Sierra Leone's women are reinterpreting traditional fabrics and fighting for their independence with a firework of colours and shapes.

Mary Ann Kai Kai is a designer. With her fashion label Madam Wokie, she mainly focuses on Gara Tie Dye and has also been teaching women the art of this traditional method of dying fabrics. For single mother Isatu Conteh, who once had to drop out of school due to her pregnancy, Gara finally means hope for a self-determined and independent life.

We accompany four Sierra Leonean women in the fulfillment of their dreams. As different as their life stories may be, they are united by one conviction: A colourful life is a happier life!
