Expert genealogist Sophie McClaren who uses her skills at digging up the past, teams up with her old high school flame Jackson Ford to save his brother’s life by tracking down the boys’ long-lost birth father, who may be their last hope for a life-saving transplant.

Expert genealogist Sophie McClaren specializes in digging up the past and bringing families together. When her close friend Jonathan Ford discovers that his leukemia has returned, Sophie and her friends rally to search for a matching bone marrow donor.

Jonathan's twin brother Jackson Ford returns to town, reigniting his old romantic interest in Sophie. When Jackson isn't a match, the boys' mother Dorothy Ford reveals a long-kept secret... Their biological father Clark Ford, long presumed dead after a mysterious accident, may still be alive. If he is, he may be the last best chance to save Jonathan's life. With few clues - an anonymous postcard and a potential sighting years after his disappearance, Sophie and Jackson begin the hunt for Clark.

This revelation upends the Ford family as well, as Jonathan and Jackson each grapple with the news in their own way. Sophie’s investigation leads them to an old friend of Clark's who admits that Clark might have abandoned his family after his accident out of fear.

Sophie submits a DNA sample to the lab for testing, as she tries to spark a romance between her protege ESME and the nervous lab assistant Winston. When that DNA sample gets a hit on a registry website, it sends them off to Boston to try to track down Clark's sister - their last remaining lead.
