Kingdom of the Stump-Tailed Macaques

This film reveals the daily lives of a troop of 60 stump-tailed macaques who have found sanctuary on a remote mountain peak in southern Thailand.

Both the males and females in the troop have gradually established dominant hierarchies through force during their occupation of the mountain, and higher ranking monkeys have earned the right to enjoy special privileges – including access to the females.

These past conflicts have led to the creation of three main family groups on the mountain and one of them is led by Bello – a powerful ruler who takes no prisoners. Macaques love nothing better than a good scrap and Bello needs all his fighting skills developed over many years to defend himself from daily aggression. He also has the responsibility of protecting his immediate family – and his hard-earned harem. How long can these macaques survive in an ever-changing world?
