China's Secret Monkey Kingdom

China’s spectacular Chongzuo nature reserve is the last refuge for one of the world’s most endangered primates – the white-headed langur. With just 1,000 left in the wild, this film reveals the intimate social lives of these free-solo specialists who live at death-defying heights.

Southwest China’s Chongzuo Nature Reserve is the last refuge for a primate on the brink of extinction – the white-headed langur. Today, there are just 1,000 left in the wild. These critically endangered monkeys have chosen towering spires of white limestone as their last refuge – stone citadels so secure they must dice with death every time they climb them.

Unprecedented access and rarely filmed behaviour reveal the intimate life of these free-solo specialists who live at such death-defying heights. The films follows a pair of babies born into two great families. Who will make it to the top and snatch the crown? All these neighbouring troops must deal with the challenges of finding food, sickness, injury, shifting family dynamics, the changing of the seasons and the ebb and flow of tribal boundaries.
