Cheetahs of The Linyanti

PLAY

The Linyanti in Northern Botswana is one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife theatres where survival often depends on strength in numbers. A super-coalition of four cheetah brothers rules one of the largest territories but three younger cheetahs are on the rise, threatening their dominance.

A mosaic of water and grassland, it’s home to a huge diversity of species and one of the greatest congregations of elephants on the planet. In this habitat, survival depends largely on strength in numbers. Competition is fierce among both scavengers and predators, all vying for the same resources, prey and overlapping territories.

Up against heavyweights like lion prides and hyena clans, the more polite predators like cheetahs shouldn’t thrive here, yet they do. It’s not easy to carve out their niche here, but those that manage are stronger for the adversity.

A super-coalition of four brothers rules the largest of the territories, but not far away a new coalition is on the rise, threatening their dominance. Three young males, learning the ropes from their devoted and hard-working mother, are on their journey to adulthood. Once they reach independence they will face a whole new barrage of challenges. They will need to hunt for themselves, steer clear of their dangerous neighbours and take on the dominant brothers next door.

The odds are not in their favour – less than ten percent of cheetah cubs survive to adulthood. Tragedy strikes when one brother is crushed beneath stampeding elephants. The two surviving brothers are forced into rival territory, where a fierce battle claims the life of a second sibling. The sole survivor now faces an uncertain future all alone.
