Part of the Canadian province of Quebec, the Magdalen Islands are a paradise of red sandstone cliffs, sandy beaches and close-knit communities. Yet beneath their beauty lies a turbulent maritime history. For centuries, treacherous waters claimed countless ships, earning the archipelago a fearsome reputation among sailors. Today, descendants of shipwreck survivors live alongside the French-speaking Acadians who have shaped the islands' culture for generations.
The archipelago is made up of a dozen islands. Seven are inhabited, and six are linked by Route 199, the single road that connects this small and resilient island world together.
