When 17-year-old Darnella Frazier raised her phone and recorded the murder of George Floyd, the images she captured travelled around the world, galvanising a global movement and forever changing her own life. In #WhileBlack, Darnella steps forward to tell her story for the first time.
Her experience is woven together with those of other people whose acts of witnessing became part of history: Diamond Reynolds, who livestreamed the aftermath of the fatal shooting of her fiancé Philando Castile; Lora King, who grew up in the shadow of the videotaped beating of her father, Rodney King; and activist Derrick Ingram, who broadcast the NYPD’s attempt to enter his home and arrest him. Together, their stories reveal what happens after an image goes viral – when public attention, political consequence and calls for change collide with trauma, harassment, loss of privacy and the struggle to regain control of one’s own story.
