In the frozen vastness of Antarctica, emperor and gentoo penguins huddle in tight formations, shielding each other from howling winds and brutal cold. Here, survival is a feat of endurance. Males guard a single egg on their feet for weeks, relying on stored fat while the females embark on hunting trips far out at sea. But the surrounding ocean holds danger. Beneath the ice, leopard seals patrol like silent assassins. Sleek and powerful, they ambush diving penguins with deadly precision. Each feeding trip becomes a perilous plunge into the unknown and if they fall prey to any predator their chicks will not survive. When they do return, the chicks finally hatch, hungry and fragile.
Thousands of kilometres north, another penguin species thrives in a very different world. The African penguin, smaller and more vocal, makes its home in the warmer waters off South Africa’s Cape coast. On Dassen Island, they nest among sand and rock, braving the heat and an entirely different set of threats.
Raising a chick here is an exhausting process. One parent guards the nest while the other heads out to sea, hunting for shoals of sardines. The journey is dangerous - before they can feast, penguins must slip past an army of Cape fur seals, which have gathered along the shoreline to breed. These powerful swimmers also prey on penguins, ambushing them in the surf. Great white sharks also roam these waters so the penguins have to be extra wary. With fishing stocks depleted by industrial fishing, the penguins have to venture huge distances to locate enough fish to feed themselves and their families.
Even on land, peril awaits. Cape gulls circle overhead, ready to snatch unattended eggs while monitor lizards move stealthily among the dunes, always ready to devour the rich protein. Back in Antartica, the penguin chicks are developing well. The parents lead them towards the water for their first foray into a new world. Their future may be uncertain, but their fierce instincts for survival will hold them in good stead.
