Swamp Bears

In the remote Boreal Forests of Finland, a mother brown bear, Metsa, prepares for the long, harsh winter ahead. As the last leaves fall and the temperature drops, Metsa knows it’s time to find a safe place to hibernate. Her two cubs, Karhu and Kettu, are playful and curious, blissfully unaware of the hardships that lie ahead. Metsa’s primary task is to lead them to a secluded den where they will spend the winter months in deep slumber, protected from the biting cold and potential predators.

With the arrival of spring, Metsa and her cubs emerge from their den, thin but alive. The forest is awakening, and Metsa’s work begins in earnest. Even though it’s still snowing, her summer clock is counting down – it’s time to fatten up before winter returns. Perhaps the best prize for a hungry bear is finding a carcass in the swamp. Animals who lost the battle against the cold and were frozen over and are now a thawing feast. But it comes with risk because the wolf pack is here too. Metsa must also be constantly vigilant and wary of lone male bears who could threaten her cubs.

The story also follows a wolf pack that shares this forest. The wolves have their own cubs, and their interactions provide a fascinating parallel to Metsa’s story. The wolves, led by a strong alpha pair, face similar challenges in finding food and protecting their young from threats. The pack dynamics and their coordinated hunting techniques offer a glimpse into the lives of these elusive predators.
