Canada's wild landscapes are under siege. Fast-spreading hybrid “superpigs” are wreaking havoc on ecosystems, farmlands, and wildlife - even in sub-zero temperatures. Now, they’re poised to cross the border and invade the United States. Originally introduced as livestock, superpigs are a cross between wild boars and domestic pigs, this hybrid animal possesses the best qualities of each species: they’re intelligent, vicious, and have supercharged reproductive abilities. Since 2001, wild pigs in Canada have increased from 0 to an estimated 62,000, spanning a range of over 750,000 kilometers. Male pigs roam in territories up to 300 square KM!
With exclusive access to feral pig expert Dr. Ryan Brook, we'll follow his mission deep into Canada's frozen wilderness, as he uses innovative scientific strategies to combat the explosive growth of these destructive swine - despite unsupportive governments unwilling to take the problem seriously.
Through Brook's research, the film will reveal the pigs' resourcefulness and adaptability as they survive in sub-zero temperatures. By sourcing unique sources of food and building "pigloos" to stay warm, they've defied the experts who claimed they couldn’t live through a harsh Canadian winter.
We'll also meet farmers, wildlife officials, and other leading researchers to explore how scientists are teaming up with others to defend the native ecology and wildlife that’s increasingly under threat, and compare it to other recent wild pig outbreaks in Europe and around the world.
From the impressive nature of these wild pigs, to the science deployed to study their growth, to the ecological and economic devastation left in their wake, Invasion of the Superpigs will reveal all sides of this human-cause catastrophe, one that will forever alter the North American landscape.
