Natural History and Wildlife

Defending the Family

From lethal jaws to clever alliances, see how animals defend their young against every threat.

In the natural world there’s no greater measure of success than leaving a genetic legacy. It’s the driver of most behaviour; in the animal kingdom the desire to breed and defend young sits above all else. It’s a vital mission, and is rarely an easy task, requiring ancient knowledge and skill.

As such, each animal deploys its own unique strategies to get the job done; creative and impressive solu-tions befitting such a monumental challenge. Some fight for their own with lethal jaws, whilst others get in help, preferring to hire neighbourhood bodyguards. Some rely on close friends to help them out and others choose to isolate themselves in a fortress instead. It’s not just humans with a strong urge to protect their own. Whatever their plan for a safe home, one thing’s for sure - animals will stop at nothing to defend their families.
